Donor:

Novo Nordisk Foundation, Denmark

Period:

2024 – 2026

Budget:

DKK 2,141,018

Target countries:

Kenya and Palestine

Summary:

This project aims to promote the use of spirulina and mealworms as food and/or feed additives in vulnerable communities in Kenya and Palestine to address food insecurity challenges, whilst creating job opportunities in the targeted regions. The project will apply a participatory approach to support local farmers, groups and partners to establish insect farms and Spirulina ponds; gain technical skills to maximise yields, and; tailor and target products to relevant markets. The research project leverages the experience and complementary capacities of several organisations, including icipe, DCA, Thriving Green, and MAAN Development Center; a blend of actors with relevant technical and practical expertise, well-established local operations and networks who are uniquely positioned to deliver results and contribute to wider evidence on climate smart food systems approaches in nexus settings.

Findings from the project will inform future initiatives, through sector-wide information sharing and collaboration with public-private partners and policy makers.
